Hospital waiting list grows – but four theatres lie idle because of recruitment ban (Eire)

A quarter of the operating theatres at University Hospital in Galway are currently closed, resulting in even longer waiting times for elective procedures to be carried out – and there is no prospect of them being reopened in the short term.

Against that backdrop, a crucial meeting is to take place between the Minister for Health and a delegation of hospital staff next week to discuss the impact on patient care due to the lack of theatre nurses.

It follows fears that the emergency department at Ballinasloe's Portiuncula Hospital could close at night because of a lack of available doctors – management at the hospital are trying to avert this situation from happening.

Earlier in the week it was announced that the accident and emergency at Roscommon Hospital would close at 8pm each evening with patients having to go to Ballinasloe in the event of urgent medical assistance being required.

But if the emergency department in Portiuncula shuts down at night, then patients will have to travel to Galway city putting even more pressure on UCH.

Meanwhile, management at UCH are going 'cap in hand' to Minister James Reilly in the hope of lifting the moratorium on recruitment in the hope of reopening the theatres that currently lie in darkness.
