Operating department practitioner struck off following conviction

Operating department practitioner Kirk Grimsley has been struck off the HPC Register following a conviction for possessing a controlled class A drug with intent to supply and possessing a controlled class B drug.

A panel of the HPC Conduct and Competence Committee heard how Kirk Grimsley was convicted at Peterborough Crown Court and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Panel Chair Mr Charles O Brian commented:

The Registrant committed a serious criminal offence involving the possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply, and possession of Class B drugs. In respect of that offence he received an immediate custodial sentence of 18 months.

It is the Panel s firm judgement that the conviction of the registrant for such an offence has undermined the trust that members of the public place in the profession and has such a consequence of undermining trust in Kirk Grimsley. His position places him in contact with patients who expect their ODP to have the highest standards and to act with integrity at all times.

The panel decided the most appropriate action was to strike Kirk Grimsley from the Register with an Interim Suspension Order in place to cover the appeal period.

Kirk Grimsley attended the hearing and was represented by Counsel.
