Nursing Standard reports this week that the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is to discuss adding the word 'compassion' to the nurses' code.

The move is a response to the report by Robert Francis QC highlighting poor care in Mid Staffordshire.

Boom in applications for nursing degree courses

New figures from the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS) show there were nearly 12,000 more applications since last year.
