Hospital Operating Theatre Closes for Repairs

ORTHOPAEDIC patients awaiting operations have been hit by cancellations again, this time as one of the hospital's theatres has had to close.

Health and Social Services announced that Operating Theatre 4 could no longer be used until engineers had fixed a fault in the ventilation hoods of the air-handling system.

Operating Theatre 4 is dedicated to orthopaedic surgery and 13 operations scheduled to take place in there this week have been postponed.

It follows months of uncertainty for such patients who have had procedures cancelled because of a lack of beds, with De Sausmarez Ward being closed, and a lack of staff.

That ward, which is predominantly for orthopaedic patients, reopened last week.

Richard Evans, HSSD's deputy chief officer and director of corporate services, pictured, said the department had no choice but to close the operating theatre as a precautionary measure until the issue was resolved.
