Send staff to fight Ebola, NHS told

A British doctor working in Sierra Leone has called on health trusts in the UK to be more willing to send medical staff to help fight the Ebola virus there.

Dr Oliver Johnson criticised the Government for stopping some direct flights to the region, saying that is how his staff and supplies are transported to the area.

Dr Johnson, programme director of King's College London Sierra Leone Partnership, told Sky News more must be done to fight the disease, which has claimed the lives of almost 5,000 people worldwide.

"Direct flights such as the Gambia Bird flight have been stopped by the British Government, but that is how my team get out here, that's how I get my medical supplies out here," he said.

"I need to get NHS trusts to get behind this and say yes we can spare, from a large NHS trust, just one doctor, for a couple of months to help this effort."

Dr Johnson also warned people must treat medical staff and volunteers returning from West Africa "like humans, not like lepers", adding that he thought there had been some overreaction in America to people who have come home after treating victims.

Britain has so far pledged a £205 million assistance package to help fight the outbreak in Sierra Leone.

The aid includes support for 700 treatment beds to help up to 8,800 patients over six months, as well as shoring up the country's stretched public health services to help contain the disease.
