Have Your Say on a New Support Role for Nursing

Health Education England (HEE) has launched its consultation on a new support role for nursing.

In December 2015, the Government announced a plan to create a new nursing support role.

The new role is expected to work alongside care assistants and registered nurses to deliver hands-on care, focusing on ensuring patients continue to get the compassionate care they deserve. This new role has the potential to transform the nursing and care workforce and making sure the role has a clear entry and progression point will be crucial in its development.

The Shape of Caring review recommended developing this role because of an NHS need - providing benefits for patients, the NHS and the individuals who are trained.

HEE aims to ensure that the staff of the future are ready, willing and able to deliver the high quality care patients need and can adapt to change as it happens. We want to create a career pathway that offers progression opportunities and gives job satisfaction to those who want to develop themselves in this important profession.

Overall, we want to create a new type of care worker with a higher skillset to assist, support and complement the care given by registered nurses.

Now, there's the chance to have your voice heard on this potential new role and encourage your colleagues and networks to do the same.

Who should take part?

This consultation is open to anyone interested in a new role for nursing, including patients and users of health and social care, nurses, care assistants, employers, students, educationalists, commissioners and professional and membership organisations, among others. Once the consultation has closed, we will publish the outcomes and make recommendations to the HEE Board.

A document explaining the proposed role in more detail can be downloaded from this page.

If you have any queries, please email the consultation team at the address below, although a set of frequently asked questions can be accessed from this page.

Thank you for taking part in this consultation.

This consultation closes on Friday 11 March 2016 (00:00 GMT)
