A panel of the HCPTS heard that Mrs Thomson was employed as a senior practitioner when on two separate occasions whilst on-call she attended work in the Cardiovascular Theatres whilst under the influence of alcohol.

The Panel further heard that one of the operations taking place when Mrs Thomson attended under the influence of alcohol was lengthy and complicated.

The Panel Chair commented:

“Inevitably patients who are being operated upon, are vulnerable. The success of an operation depends on the competence of those responsible for their performance. In attending, when under the influence of alcohol, as she did, Mrs Thomson exposed the patients in her care to greatly increased risk.”

The Panel ordered for the name of Catrina Thomson to be suspended from the HCPC Register for a period of twelve months.

Mrs Thomson was neither present nor represented at the hearing.
