The team at Highland has shown off the new room, which includes an advanced imaging system that is capable of taking pictures of arteries from within the artery.

Those images allow doctors to perform advanced endovascular procedures in a minimally-invasive way.

The machine is the first of its kind in upstate New York - and just the eighth one to be installed in the United States.

Surgeons say it's a night and day difference.

"Operations that used to take anywhere from 5 to 8 hours can now be done in up to 90 minutes or 2 hours," said Road Glocker, assistant professor of vascular surgery at Highland Hospital. "And the patient used to have a 7-10 day hospital stay; now they can often go home the next day."

The machine can also be used for regular, non-vascular operations.
